Review: Air Mauritius Mumbai to Mauritius Business Class

We visited Mauritius for a 9 day trip in 2022. To reach Mauritius, we flew Vistara and Air Mauritius business class from India.

Booking

We booked all the flights via Aeroplan. This is due to its partnership with both Vistara and Air Mauritius which allowed us to stitch the journey together from Delhi to Mauritius and from Mauritius to Amritsar on return. There can be issues with flying with partners though, as we ran into, which I will get to in another post.

If we had needed to fly Air India as part of the journey, we would have had that option via Air Canada as well, because both Air India and Air Canada are part of the Star Alliance. Air Canada has gone out of its way to form partnerships with airlines around the world outside of Star Alliance, which makes its points very attractive because of their ability to be used over a huge network of airlines.

We booked Business Class service each way for a total of 45,000 Aeroplan points + CAD 22.20 (taxes) + CAD 39 (partner booking fee). We flew from Delhi to Mauritius via Mumbai with Vistara operating the Delhi to Mumbai leg, and Air Mauritius operating the Mumbai to Mauritius leg. For the onward journey, there wasn't business class availability on Vistara but Aeroplan still charged the total applicable business class price for the journey. This is unlike Avianca's Lifemiles' policy for example, which discounts award price proportionally based on the part of the journey flown in Economy. We didn't mind the 2 hour flight in Economy, as we wanted to experience the 6 hour journey on Air Mauritius's Business class product.

Lounge

In Mumbai, we were given access to the common business class lounge, which didn't feel that private due to most seating in the aisles. We didn't eat much as it was past midnight and shortly made way to our gate.

Air Mauritius Business Class Seat

Air Mauritius features fully lie-flat Business class seats on this route. The seats were in 1-2-1 configuration. As we were travelling as a couple, we chose the middle two seats. We used seatguru.com to find seats without issues, like not too close to the restrooms.

The seats were comfortable, and we were provided with a pillow, comforter, a sanitation kit and an amenity bag. There were no Air Mauritius pajamas on this flight unfortunately.

The amenity kit was by France based designer Christian Lacroix. It included toothbrush and toothpaste, facial mist, eau de toilette, hand cream, a multi-mode charging cable and a pen.

Food

We were served breakfast on this flight as the flight was past midnight and landed in Mauritius in the morning. We were given a choice of a Continental breakfast or Indian breakfast. We chose continental. It was ok for the day but nothing exceptional.

Entertainment

Business Class featured big entertainment screens which spanned our seat width. The selection of movies wasn't too broad. One great feature was the live view of the outside via Airplane head camera. There wasn't much to see during takeoff and during the flight as it was either dark or amongst the clouds, but the landing view was worthwhile. You could see the expanse of Indian Ocean beyond the airport, and the location of the airport on the cusp of the small island nation.

Service

I found the service on the airplane to be quite good. The air hostesses were courteous and versed in multiple languages including English, French, Marathi. They were also keen to make everyone's journey better and checked on passengers often.

Overall, barring the technical issue with an Air Mauritius airplane that we ran into later, I enjoyed the Business class ride on this Air Mauritius flight from Mumbai to Mauritius. Unless Air India ups its game, it is one of the better options to get to the island nation from India. I would have been more willing to give them another try if they were able to resolve issues from our return flight.
